In the south of the 14th arrondissement of Paris, a few steps from the Parc Montsouris, the picturesque neighbourhood of the Petit Montrouge is the setting of many townhouses and artist studios, among them the Villa Seurat and the studios of Planeix and Ozenfant.
Today the home of a well-known photographer, this 1940s modernist building in the style of Le Corbusier features two levels of professional spaces topped by a triplex apartment. In this intervention, the dilapidated shed at the back of the courtyard is replaced by a workspace and dark room. The roof of the studio doubles as the floor of an upper courtyard, which serves as a setting for natural-light photography. Clad in wooden decking, this outdoor studio is set within the walls of the adjacent buildings. Their crude stone construction is exposed and the traces of the pitched roof of the former shed are left apparent, testifying to edifice’s past incarnation. Forging a relationship between the upper and lower ateliers, a wooden work surface is fitted under the precise plan of the skylight, a pane of glass set into the wooden deck above.
